My portrait of Tara was inspired by this portrait of Countess Anne Marie Louise Thélusson. It was painted by Jacques Louis David in 1790. Tara’s original oil painting was a commission, and her people chose brighter colors. They had a connection with the sea, so we created a seaside background.
Okay, so I’m a Pug person, who wouldn’t be absolutely captivated by the adorable King Charles Spaniel? This is sweet little Tara, and the photo I used to paint her portrait. I think the painting turned out quite nicely, but honestly, with a subject like Tara, how could I go wrong?
You’ll find many prints, and over 100 magnets in my shop. I’ve painted so many more portraits than that. They all start with either a picture of an animal or an historical portrait. From there, the creative process starts. I look for just the right fit; animal, attire, and pose. Then I sketch it, and then paint it.
