These dog fridge magnets are absolutely perfect for the sophisticated animal lover.
Chloe models herself after this painting. The original subject is Infanta Margarita Theresa. There were several paintings created of her as she was growing up. This is the most famous one. It would be hard to imagine a young girl standing still in such a dress long enough to have a portrait artist create such a painting. But she must have done so.
I created the painting of this adorable pup, which was later transformed into Cavalier King Charles merchandise. But I never make my subjects pose for even a minute. All of my portraits are painted from photographs. That’s a luxury that the artists of centuries ago did not have.
It all starts with a photo. This little darling King Charles Spaniel was such a good girl, getting her picture taken. Sometimes it’s difficult to see details on dogs that have black fur. Chloe’s features stand out pretty will in this photo, though. Because she’s a small dog, an historical painting of a young girl worked best for her. Her figure is more compact, like a child’s figure is.
Then it’s time to put our new subject into the historical painting. Sometimes it’s not quite as easy as plopping the head onto the body, and it takes some maneuvering to adjust the body shape and size to bring it all together. The goal is to create a portrait that is believable… even though dogs and other animals don’t wear clothes like this, and even though the anatomy under the clothes doesn’t really jive with human anatomy.
It’s all in good fun, though. And the end result is animals who are honored in portraiture much like the historical subjects were, long ago when their portraits were painted.
